If your sink is leaking, addressing the issue quickly can prevent water damage, mold, and higher utility bills. Sink leaks are common and often easy to diagnose, especially if you take a systematic approach before calling a plumber.
Start by identifying where the leak is coming from. Look under the sink while running the water and check for dripping or pooling. Common leak points include the faucet base, supply lines, shutoff valves, drain connections, and the P-trap. Dry the area with a towel first so you can clearly see where water reappears. If the leak is coming from the faucet, it may be due to worn-out washers, cartridges, or seals. Tightening loose fittings with a wrench can sometimes solve the problem, but be careful not to overtighten, as this can cause damage. If the faucet continues to leak, replacing the internal components or the entire faucet may be necessary. Leaks under the sink often come from supply lines or drain pipes. Check the water supply hoses for cracks, corrosion, or loose connections. Gently tighten the connections at the shutoff valve and faucet. If the hoses are damaged, they should be replaced, as temporary fixes can fail unexpectedly. Drain leaks usually occur at slip nuts or joints along the P-trap. These fittings can loosen over time or develop worn washers. Hand-tightening the slip nuts or replacing the washers often resolves the issue. If you notice cracks in the pipe itself, replacing that section is the safest solution. If the leak is coming from the sink basin or drain flange, the seal may have failed. Resealing with plumber’s putty or silicone may be required, which often involves removing and reinstalling the drain assembly. Finally, if you cannot locate the source of the leak or the repair feels beyond your skill level, turn off the water supply and contact a licensed plumber. Prompt action can save money and prevent more serious plumbing problems down the line.
